Hey y’all, Shannon here!

If there’s one question I get asked more than anything else, it’s: "Shannon, how do you clean a room fast without feeling like you’re running in circles?"

Well, I’m going to let you in on the single best cleaning secret I know. It’s simple, it’s foolproof, and once you start doing it this way, you’ll never go back. I call it the Top-to-Bottom, Left-to-Right Golden Rule.

Why Most Folks Waste Time Cleaning

We’ve all done it—you wipe down the coffee table, vacuum the rug, and then look up and realize the ceiling fan is covered in dust. So you wipe down the fan, and what happens? All that dust settles right back down on the nice, clean table and rug you just finished! Now you’re cleaning the same spot twice, wasting time and extra elbow grease.

Step 1: Work Top to Bottom

Gravity is always working, so let’s make it work for us!

When you step into any room, always start at the highest point:

High Spots First: Dust cobwebs out of the ceiling corners, wipe off ceiling fan blades, and clean top shelves or door frames.

Middle Level: Next, work on eye-level items—light switches, picture frames, tabletops, and counters.

Floors Last: Whatever dust or crumbs get knocked down during the process will land right on the floor. That’s why sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping should always be the absolute last thing you do before stepping out of the room.

Step 2: Work Left to Right

Ever walk into a room, pick up a toy, carry it across the floor, wipe a counter, and end up darting all over the place? That’s what bogs us down.

Instead, pick a spot to start—usually right inside the door—and move clockwise (left to right) around the perimeter of the room. Focus only on the section right in front of you before moving to the next. By the time you loop back around to where you started, the whole room is done!

Shannon’s Quick Takeaways

1. Don't touch the floor until the dusting is done.

2. Move in one steady direction around the room.

3. Keep your supplies in a carry-along caddy so you aren't walking back and forth to the kitchen sink.

Try this out next time you’re tackling the living room or bedroom. You’ll be amazed at how much faster the chores go—leaving you with more time to sit back, relax, and enjoy your clean home!

Got a room that’s giving you fits? Let me know in the comments or drop us a message anytime!

Warmly,

Shannon
